IMD to start issuing predictions for major malaria outbreak from next monsoon, says official
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will begin issuing forecast for malaria outbreaks from subsequent monsoon, Ministry of Earth Sciences secretary M Rajeevan mentioned on Saturday.
Delivering a lecture on ‘current advances in climate and local weather predictions’, organised by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Rajeevan mentioned India additionally plans to ramp up its high-performance computing (HPC) facility from the prevailing capability of 10 petaflops to 40 petaflops, a step that can considerably assist in enhancing climate predictions.
Currently, India is barely subsequent to the US, the UK and Japan in HPC.
A report launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences this week mentioned practically Rs 990 crore spent on the National Monsoon Mission and HPC had yielded dividend 50 occasions the funding made.

On the prediction of any vector-borne illness outbreak, the IMD studied the phenomenon of prevalence in malaria and its relationship with rainfall and temperature, Rajeevan later instructed PTI.
“The IMD first studied the malaria data it got from Nagpur. This can be applied to other places as well. This can give predictions on large scale malaria outbreaks,” Rajeevan mentioned.
He mentioned the identical method will be utilized to different monsoon-related ailments similar to dengue and cholera.
”The IMD will make the malaria forecast service operational by the subsequent monsoon,” he mentioned.
