Using Google pay for your transactions? Probe ordered against the payments app
New Delhi: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation on tech big Google for utilizing its dominant place to advertise its Google Pay –its funds utility –over different competing apps.
It has been alleged by an informant that Google, by way of its management over the Play Store and Android Operating System (OS), is favouring Google Pay over different competing apps, to the drawback of each apps facilitating cost by way of UPI, in addition to customers. As per the informant, this quantities to abuse of its dominant place by Google in violation of varied provisions of Section four of the Act, it stated.
The CCI order stated that the informant has given an in depth background of the Android ecosystem with regard to sensible cell units highlighting the significance of Play Store within the general Android structure.
The CCI stated that the fee is of the prima facie view that the ‘Opposite Parties’ — Google, Alphabet Inc. — have contravened numerous provisions of Section four of the Act, and it warrants an in depth investigation.
“In view of the foregoing, the Commission directs the Director General (‘DG’) to cause an investigation to be made into the matter under the provisions of Section 26(1) of the Act. The Commission also directs the DG to complete the investigation and submit the investigation report within a period of 60 days from the date of receipt of this order,” it stated.

In response to the allegations, Google and its mum or dad firm Alphabet Inc. stated that Google doesn’t favour the GPay app (Tez) in Play’s search rankings and these allegations are “wholly misconceived”.
“Google ranks search results in Play based on multiple criteria which do not favour the GPay app (Tez). Further, Google has every commercial incentive to ensure that its search rankings in Play provide users with high quality, relevant apps that are responsive to the user’s query,” they stated of their reply.
The CCI order additionally stated that that nothing acknowledged within the order shall tantamount to a remaining expression of opinion on the deserves of the case and the DG shall conduct the investigation “without being swayed in any manner whatsoever by the observations made herein”.
