McLaren boss expects Sebastian Vettel to leave Formula One
Daniel Ricciardo was McLaren`s first alternative to interchange Ferrari-bound Spaniard Carlos Sainz and Sebastian Vettel was by no means within the body, the Formula One staff`s chief govt Zak Brown stated on Friday.
He anticipated Vettel, who’s leaving Ferrari on the finish of 2020, to retire.
“Obviously Seb`s an awesome driver and a four-time champion,” the American informed Sky Sports tv.
“But I believe we had been fairly far down the trail within the low season and knew we might both land with Daniel or Carlos.
“We never really entertained anyone beyond that, and especially with Seb`s late breaking news — we were pretty far down the path at that point.”
Ferrari stated on Tuesday that Vettel, who gained all his titles with Red Bull between 2010-13, could be leaving after six years with them.
McLaren introduced two days later that Australian Ricciardo was becoming a member of them from Renault for 2021 with Sainz heading to Maranello on a two-year deal to companion Charles Leclerc.
Former world champions McLaren had tried to signal Ricciardo in 2018, when the seven occasions race winner was at Red Bull mulling his choices, and Brown stated that they had “stayed close”.
Brown added that Vettel had restricted choices if he wished to proceed.
“It doesn`t look like there`s a Mercedes or Red Bull opportunity for him, there`s not a McLaren opportunity for him, clearly not at Ferrari, so the next best is Renault,” he stated.
“And the subsequent query is does Seb need to go together with a staff that’s most likely not going to win in 2021?
“It`s a great team and they too should be moving up the grid but I think unless Seb wants to restart a journey with a team that`s back on a journey — then I think he`ll end up probably leaving the sport unfortunately.”
Renault completed fifth total final yr, a spot behind McLaren who’re switching from the French producer`s engines to Mercedes in 2021.
