Don McLean’s tribute song for Vincent Van Gogh lyrics up for sale for $1.5 million
The authentic handwritten lyrics of Don McLean’s music “Vincent”, a tribute to painter Vincent van Gogh, are going up on the market with an asking value of $1.5 million.
Los Angeles-based uncommon paperwork vendor Moments in Time mentioned on Wednesday that the lyrics, scrawled in pencil over 14 pages with deletions and additions, are being offered by an individual who acquired them straight from the American singer-songwriter.
“They are written in pencil. There are some corrections. They differ very slightly from the final lyrics, which show he really had the song well thought out in his head when he wrote it,” mentioned Gary Zimet, proprietor of Moments in Time.
First launched in 1971, “Vincent” opens with the phrases “Starry, starry night” and was impressed by the painter’s well-known work “The Starry Night.” McLean, now 74, has mentioned he was impressed to write down it after studying a biography of van Gogh.
Zimet mentioned he would love the lyrics to finish up on the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which homes the biggest assortment of artworks by the 19th-century painter in addition to lots of of drawings and letters. The “Vincent” music can also be performed on the museum.
“I am hoping they buy it. They should have it. That would be ideal,” Zimet mentioned, referring to the museum.
